Dabbevariki Chedu Story
The film begins in a village, Giripuram, where a landlord, Vishwanatham, has three daughters—Devi, Swarna, and Mamatha—and a son, Manohar. The first two daughters are married: Devi to Govardhanam, an employee in a firm, and Swarna to Lakshmikanth, a stingy man. Devi is orthodox and devotes most of her time to religious rituals, while Lakshmikanth & Swarna feign affection toward Vishwanatham to usurp his wealth. Vishwanatham’s outspoken brother-in-law frequently warns him about their deception, but he denies it. Meanwhile, Vishwanatham’s childhood friend Udaya Bhaskaram informs him that his son will soon visit the village. By mistake, the family receives Vidyasagar, a journalist for Udayam paper, and showers him with hospitality. He falls in love with Mamatha, and when the truth comes out, Mamatha boldly leaves and marries him. Parallelly, Govardhan grows frustrated with Devi and starts an affair with his colleague, Jayaseela. When Devi learns of this, she approaches her father seeking a divorce, and Vishwanatham reconciles her. Later, Vishwanatham sets out on a pilgrimage with his brother-in-law. Mamatha and Vidyasagar come to bid farewell, and before leaving, Vishwanatham forgives and embraces everyone. Tragically, the bus they travel in meets with a fatal accident, and Vishwanatham dies. Soon after, the daughters receive a peculiar testament: a safe deposit of {{INRConvert|5000000}} will go to whichever of them becomes widowed or divorced—triggering a comic chain of events.
Greedy Lakshmikanth & Swarna rush to claim it and stage a sham divorce. Devi also decides on divorce, as Govardhan continues his affair. However, Jayaseela repents and pleads with Govardhan to reform. Meanwhile, though Vidyasagar & Mamatha truly loved and respected Vishwanatham, they too consider divorce to stay eligible. Vidyasagar seeks the help of Dharmalingam, a crafty advocate specializing in divorce cases. Dharmalingam, however, schemes to marry him to his daughter Shanti after the divorce and blackmails him, despite Shanti’s unwillingness. Eventually, suspicion arises between Mamatha and Shanti but is soon resolved. With a clever trick, Vidyasagar frees himself from Dharmalingam’s clutches. Ultimately, all three couples succeed in obtaining their divorces and arrive at the bank—unaware of each other’s intentions. When bank officials demand original documents, they all rush back to Giripuram. As a twist, Vishwanatham reappears alive, revealing that he staged the drama as part of a bet with his brother-in-law to test his children’s affection. In the end, he arranges the re-nuptials of his daughters and sons-in-law. Devi resists but is pacified by Govardhan’s apology. Finally, the movie ends comically with Vishwanatham announcing that he is “once again heading on a tour to draft a New Testament.”
