Batasari Story
Surendranath (Suren), a lone wolf, is the maternal grandson and heir of the Zamindar of Dharapuram. He stays with his father, Raghavaiah, and stepmother, Sundaramma, who raises Suren with mollycoddle. Suren, currently pursuing graduation, sets his sights on going to England for higher education. Sundaramma dismisses it, so, peeved, Suren quits and proceeds to Madras. Appa Rao, a wealthy man, lives there with his son, Siva Chandra, and two daughters, Madhavi and Prameela. Madhavi, an honorable young widow, takes care of the household. Suren approaches Appa Rao for a job, who appoints him as a tutor to Prameela and provides him shelter. Madhavi notices Suren’s distraught nature and covertly cares for his needs. A strange adoration blossoms between them, and Suren silently loves her without ever seeing her face. This sparks rumors that Madhavi is anguished, and she scolds Suren for neglecting his duties. Upset, he leaves on an aimless journey but meets with a fatal accident. After his recovery, Raghavaiah takes Suren back, informing Appa Rao. The separation disconcerts both Suren and Madhavi, but they resign themselves to fate. Meanwhile, Suren’s grandfather passes away, and he inherits the estate, which stirs the envy of his sly Diwan, Alwar. Following this, he marries benevolent Shanti, who worships him. However, Suren does not reciprocate because his heart longs for Madhavi.
Parallelly, Appa Rao dies, Siva Chandra marries the shrewd Kanti, and she mistreats Madhavi. Hurt, Madhavi leaves for her in-laws’ house, which is under Suren’s regime, but Pullaiah, her peasant, envies her. Shanti reforms Suren into a good Samaritan who manages his responsibilities and curbs the Diwan’s atrocities. Yet, his health deteriorates due to the aftereffects of the accident. Shanti wishes to share every aspect of Suren’s life when he confesses his sacred love for Madhavi. Suren requests Shanti to bring Madhavi to him once before his death, but she denies. Meanwhile, Pullaiah conspires with the Diwan and sells off Madhavi’s assets. Anguished, Madhavi goes to confront Suren, unaware of the truth. She silently watches him and is about to leave, but Suren realizes everything and rushes to her. Simultaneously, Shanti prays fervently, conscious that this will lead to her husband’s death. At last, with great difficulty, Suren reaches Madhavi and dies in her lap upon their first look at each other. Madhavi, too, breathes her last beside him. Finally, the movie ends showing that the duo are immortal.
