Devadas Story
The film Devadasu (starring Akkineni Nageswara Rao as Devadas and Savitri as Parvati) is based on Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay’s classic Bengali novel Devdas. It tells the tragic tale of Devadasu, a wealthy zamindar’s son, and Parvati (Paru), his childhood friend and neighbor. Though they share a deep bond of love, societal pride and ego create insurmountable barriers. Devadasu’s father rejects the match due to Paru’s lower social status, and in turn Paru is married off to a wealthy but much older man. Heartbroken and powerless, Devadasu turns to alcohol as a means to escape his pain.
As his despair grows, Devadasu falls into a self-destructive spiral. Despite the unwavering care of his loyal friend Bhagawan and the compassion of the courtesan Chandramukhi, he is unable to free himself from his obsession with Paru. He drifts further into alcoholism, his health deteriorating rapidly. In the end, Devadasu sets out to see Paru one last time, but collapses at the doorstep of her house, dying without reunion. The story remains a timeless portrayal of unfulfilled love, societal barriers, and the tragic downfall of a sensitive soul.
